Case studies
Approximately 50% of UK energy is consumed by electric motors. Motors are used in many different situations for a huge variety of applications. Many of these motors are critical, whether part of a production process (a crane motor in a steel plant) or as an emergency standby (a pump motor). At Whitelegg we have over 30 years experience in motor diagnostics and related equipment supply.
Motors can now be tested online -whilst they are running, as well as offline -when they are taken out of service. The online test is via the motor control cabinet so there is no need to get to the motor which is often difficult to access. A fully automatic test can then be carried out.
Immediately the motor efficiency is calculated. The owner of the motor can then see just how much power is being wasted. The test is comprehensive covering the control cabinet, the motor and most importantly the load. Mechanical and electrical issues are easily highlighted and preventative maintenance can be carried out.
Motors and their loads can then be tested on a regular basis and their energy usage trended. Great savings can be made be identifying inefficient motors that may have run inefficiently for years.
If motors are taken out of service for repair, the latest generation of automatic winding surge testers can fully test the electrical windings and find faults that other tests miss. Again a database can easily be set up and the machine will test the motor parameters as indicated on the motor nameplate.
