Case Study

MEP ROM Group

A Case Study on MEP Rebar Equipment in use at ROM Reinforcements, Sheffield

The ROM Group's Sheffield production area covers 9000m2 and is involved in a varied product output. The growth of business over the previous years and the requirement for increased tonnage and more flexible production led the management to research the options for a modern cut and bend solution. At the time, this relied on separate shear lines and reinforcement benders, involving extra staff and double handling.

The in-house team commenced a lengthy process of reviewing all available equipment on the market. This involved visits to other plants and to manufacturers both in the UK and overseas. ROM's main interest was equipment to cut and bend from coil, with 16mm diameter being the major requirement. Macchine Elettroniche Piegatrici Spa.( MEP) located in Udine, Northern Italy, was one of the companies that was visited.

MEP machine

In Italy, the ROM team saw, amongst others, the MEP Multimatic 20, a versatile coil fed, CNC cut and bender for the rapid manufacture of large and medium sized stirrups. The Multimatic 20 incorporates six feed heads and, in the case of ROM's machine, these were 2×10mm, 2×12mm and 2×16mm feeds. It is capable of processing up to 2×16mm wires simultaneously direct from coil - a very important benefit for high speed output.

ROM - Straightening rollers

Its patented secondary bending head allowing large stirrups to be bent at both ends. Change over between sizes and spent and fresh coils being automatic. The Multimatic also features an automatic collection trolley which moves into position to collect individual parts as they are produced.

ROM - The finished product

Of particular interest to ROM was the MEP patented, automatic, anti-twist, straightening system, integral within the machine, which can memorise wire diameters and even different suppliers' wire. The bending and straightening mechanism may be precisely calibrated to the characteristics of the coil supplied which vary widely in quality and presentation; the result being flat and uniform bends, vital for the construction industry. All MEP machines are able to deal with stainless feed stock. Currently the MEP processes 20-30 tonnes per eight hour shift.

The decision to choose MEP was due to their build quality, engineered advantages, robustness and ease of use.
