Case Study

MEP: Express Reinforcements Ltd.

A Case Study on MEP Equipment installed at Express Reinforcements, Neath, S Wales.

Express Reinforcements Ltd. is a market leader in the supply of reinforcement steel to the UK construction industry. The company, along with certain others, is challenging construction industry thinking by investing and offering technical/buildability solutions that increase speed of construction.

In todays construction environment, reinforcement has to be available just-in-time, made in a wide and growing variety of shapes and produced in varying quantities. Health and Safety in the workplace and the quality of product that arrives on the construction site are two fundamentals of the value stream philosophy that Express Reinforcements tries to deliver to its customers.

MEP express

The Right Machine for the Job

Choosing the right machines for the right production applications ensures that customers get a quality product delivered right first time. At their Neath site, the main factory in the group, Express are running three types of MEP cut-and-bend machines.

The MEP Mini Syntax

A stirrup bender/shaper, which provides completely automatic reinforcement production from coiled stock, for medium to large stirrups, shaped bars, with one or two bends and for plain cut bars up to 12m in length. It handles reinforcement from 816mm and can twin feed off two wires of 12mm diameter. The Mini Syntax incorporates the unique MEP straightening system, whereby straightening rollers are controlled by a computer cursor and mimic display. This removes the axial twisting of coiled wires and reduces setting time, allowing the end user to produce flat components required for fitting on site. Additionally, a patented secondary feeding unit allows for the production of large shapes bent at both ends. Supporting the Mini Syntax are a Format S, a dedicated link bender, and a Concept 91.

The Format S

This uses either cold drawn or hot rolled wire to produce small to medium size stirrups. Its patented straightening system can accommodate any quality of feed stock in sizes from 412mm, with double feed capability of 10mm wire.

Express feedout

The Concept91

This is a fully automatic stirrup bender fed from coil covering sizes from 616mm and a double feed of 12mm. The windows memory holds all relevant shape data and graphic visualisation of the part to be made. Operation is simple, enabling fast and efficient shape change to match Express Reinforcements varied production schedule.

Concluding Observations

For the management at Express the choice of MEP equipment was based on wide research of competitive products, the impression gained from the MEP factory visit in Italy, the feed back from colleagues in the industry and the quality and service back up available. Finally choosing the right machines for the right production applications ensures that customers get a quality product delivered right first time.
